Akkuş

Akkuş is a district of Ordu province. Its surface area is 636 km². It is located in an area surrounded by Ünye and Samsun in the north, Niksar and Tokat in the south. The old name of the district is Karakuş. It was changed to Akkuş in 1954. In official records, it was mentioned as Karakuş in 1950 and as Akkuş in 1955. Meanwhile, the name of the administrative center was Çaldere. The history of Akkuş lands dates back to BC. The region and its surroundings came under the rule of the Phrygians between 1200 and 700 BC, then the Cimmerians, the Lydians, the Persian Kingdom in 585 BC, the Kingdom of Pontus established in 291 BC, and the Roman Empire in later periods. With the victory of Manzikert (1071), it came under the rule of the Danishmends, one of the first Turkish states established in Anatolia by Danishmend, one of the emirs of the Seljuk sultan Melikshah. Later, Seljuk Sultan II. It was included in the Seljuk lands by Kılıç Arslan. It is known that the Tibaren and Khalip tribes lived in the Akkuş lands for centuries, and that the Pontus Kingdom was dominant in later periods. Akkuş, which remained under the rule of Danişmends and Hacıemiroğlu Principality, was taken under Ottoman rule by Fatih Sultan Mehmet in the 15th century. Until 1864, Akkuş (known as Karakuş at the time) was first the township of Niksar in the Sivas Province, and then a district directly connected to Sivas. Population books of some villages from this period are available. In 1864, when Ünye, which was affiliated with Canik Sanjak, was made a sanjak, Akkuş was connected to Ünye and remained as a township affiliated with Ünye until 1954. (Ünye was connected to Canik by accident again in 1867). Akpınar town, the first center of Karakuş township, became Çaldere village after 1884. According to the first yearbook dated 1869 of the Trabzon province, which was established in 1867, only the male population of the Karakuş township was determined. Accordingly, the male population of Karakuş township consisted of 3,509 Muslims. There were no non-Muslims living within the borders of the township. It is understood that only the adult male population was identified at this date. In this case, the total population should be four times this. Based on this, it can be said that the estimated population of Karakuş township is 7,018 people. When the Ordu district was separated from the Trabzon sanjak in 1920 and became an independent sanjak, Ünye and Akkuş were annexed to Ordu.
