Arguvan
Arguvan is a district of Malatya province.
According to the findings obtained from the mounds in Morhamam and Karahüyük villages and Karababa ruins, the settlement in the district center dates back to ancient times.
From the 4th century onwards, it appears in Byzantine sources under the name Argaous. In 8th century Arabic sources, the name Argaûn is recorded. Both forms of the word are plural and mean "Arga'lar" or "Argav'lar". 11th century Armenian chronicles use the name Argawan. Although Bilge Umar emphasizes the possibility that the name *Argawana means "silver place" in an ancient Anatolian language, the documentary basis for this view is weak.
Arguvan, which was connected to Arapgir with the name Tahir bucagi during the Ottoman Empire, was later connected to Diyarbakır as a district, then in 1873 it was again turned into a district connected to Keban with the name Tahir, with the proclamation of the Republic it was connected to Malatya as the central district, and in 1954 it was turned into a district of Malatya province with the name Arguvan, with Tahir district as the center.
