Aşkale
The first settlement of the district, which has been frequented by various tribes and nations throughout history due to its geographical importance, is around the ruins of an old castle on the shore of Karasu and the east of Kaban Mountain. The name of the district has changed in history as Locus Basara, Şöğayn, Aşhane, Açhane, Kale and today it has settled in our language as Aşkale. Founded by the Hittites in 1700 BC, the district changed hands thirty-five times throughout history. The district, which was in the hands of the Roman Empire in 395 AD, attracted the attention of all nations due to its location on the Silk Road. The district, which came under Byzantine rule in 650 AD, came under the rule of Timur in 1387. After the Battle of Otlukbeli in 1473, the district was annexed by the Ottomans, occupied by the Russians in 1916 and liberated from occupation on March 3, 1918. In 1942, due to the Wealth Tax, most of the non-Muslim male citizens of Istanbul were sent to a concentration camp in this district.
In the early 1800s, its population was 1800. In 1909, it had 800 Armenian and Turkish inhabitants.
Aşkale is one of the districts of Erzurum.
