Beşikdüzü

Beşikdüzü, an ancient settlement, was mentioned as a port named Liviopolis by Pliny the Elder in the 1st century AD, and was recorded as Livopolis in the Ottoman cadastral books, and as a subaşılik named Popoli by Evliya Çelebi. The chapels located in the Hodala region (today's Bayırköy District) also give an idea about the history of the region. Özhan Öztürk claimed that Beşikdüzü, that is, ancient Liviopolis, was not only an important natural harbour, but also a settlement referred to as Kerasus in his work Anabasis by Xenophon, who came to the region in 400 BC. According to the author, today's city of Giresun is not related to Kerasus but is a continuation of Pharnakia. While it was previously a sub-district center of Vakfıkebir district, it became a town by gaining municipal status on January 4, 1949. Beşikdüzü gained district status with the law published in the Official Gazette dated 04.07.1987 and numbered 19507.
