Çaldıran

Çaldıran is a district of Van province.

The history of Çaldıran looks back to the very old aspects of the ancient east. It was one of the first stopping points of both the Persian Empire and Alexander. According to historical sources, this district, which is the crossing point on the Silk Road, Çil (40) derân (church) means the place where forty churches are located. As a result of the researches based on these data, the ruins of 37 churches were found in 3 villages in the center of Çaldıran, but they have never been touched. The historical adventure of this region, whose ancient name is Ebexe, dates back to primitive mesozoic periods. Although it is known that Sargon II, Cyrus the Great, Alexander, Timur, Timur, Shah Ismail, and the Battle of Çaldıran were fought in this plain, there is a difference of opinion among historians. As a matter of fact, the name of the settlement within the borders of Iran in the east of the district was changed to Çaldıran in 2005. Although a little smaller, there is a plain in this district as well. Iranians claim that the battle of Çaldıran was fought on this plain within their borders. The settlement, which had been a sub-district of Muradiye district since the beginning of the Republican period, became a municipality on December 17, 1986. On July 4, 1987, it became a district.
