Çankaya

Çankaya is a district of Ankara province. The district, located in the central part of Ankara province, has become the administrative center of Turkey after Ankara became the capital. According to 2022 population data, it is the first district of Ankara and the second largest district of Turkey. As one of the most populous districts of Turkey, its population is higher than many other provinces. It can reach up to two million during the day. The district is an important education city with 102 high schools and 13 universities. According to the research conducted by the Ministry of Industry and Technology of the Republic of Turkey, it was chosen as the 2nd most developed district in Turkey. Çankaya lived through the Hatti, Hittites, Phrygians, Lydians, Persian Empire, Macedonian Kingdom, Galatians, Roman Empire, Eastern Roman Empire, Great Seljuk Empire, Anatolian Seljuk State, Ahiler and Ottoman Empire periods respectively. The settlement, which lost its importance in the 19th century, developed in the early 20th century with the construction of the Baghdad Railway and later with Mustafa Kemal Atatürk commanding the War of Independence from here. Çankaya, which developed after Ankara became the capital of the newly established Republic of Turkey on October 13, 1923, reached district status with Law No. 3012 on June 15, 1936. In addition, on this date, Elmadağ and Gölbaşı subdistricts were connected to Çankaya district. With the abolition of the sub-district organization in 1960, Kayaş, Cebeci, Bahçelievler and Dikmen sub-districts lost their status. Gölbaşı and Mamak, which were included within the borders of Çankaya on 30 November 1983, gained district status and were separated from Çankaya.
