Derince

Derince is a new settlement created in the Republican period. It has a recent history as it is newly established city. In 1890, a place with the deepest coast in the Gulf of Izmit was searched for in order establish the port, the authorities determine the location of today's port as the deepest place. This place begins to be called “deep harbor” because of its depth. Therefore, Derince took its name from this port. A large number of people come to the area to work in the construction of port, which was immediately started by the Germans. In the port, which started operations in 1904, employees start to build their homes one by one. Since 1887, it has received migrations from the Balkans, Caucasus and Crimea, and has dramatically begun to expand and develop. After these developments, Atatürk gave thirty houses of land in Derince to our descendants who emigrated from Romania to Turkey in 1936. Upon the establishment of their homes, the village of Çınarlı became an independent Mukhtar in 1952. The first headman of Derince was Ahmet USTA.
