The old name of the city is Meğri. It is thought that this name derives from the Greek term Makri, meaning "far away land". It is especially developed in terms of tourism. Its population in 2022 is 177,702. It is the largest district of Muğla. It was the district with the largest surface area in the province until 2013, when Seydikemer, which was connected to here, became a district. In terms of population density, it is larger than Muğla center and other districts. Fethiye is a district of Muğla province, in the west of the Mediterranean Region. Its surface area is 3,059 km². It has the largest surface area including Muğla province. It is surrounded by Seydikemer district in the east, Akdeniz in the south, southwest and west, Dalaman district in the northwest, and Denizli's Çameli district in the north. Fethiye district, which also includes the ancient city of Telmessos, is located in the east of the Fethiye Gulf and in the southwest of the Fethiye Plain. Coming via Izmir-Muğla; The coastal road that reaches Antalya passes 1 km east of it. In this way, the distance to the provincial center Muğla is approximately 130 km. Fethiye has experienced many important earthquakes. It is known that there was an earthquake in 1856. However, in 1957, two earthquakes with a magnitude of 7.1 occurred at 19.10 on April 24 and a magnitude of 7.3 at 04.25 on April 25, killing 67 people and damaging 3200 buildings. Fethiye, which was rebuilt, now has a modern port and marina. In the earthquake that occurred in Fethiye on January 14, 1969, with a magnitude of 6.2, there was no loss of life, but there were injuries and houses and workplaces were damaged. There was no loss of life or property in the earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 off the coast of Ölüdeniz on June 10, 2012, but many houses and workplaces were damaged.
