Potamia is thought to be an insignificant Greek village founded during the Trebizond Empire, which first appeared in Ottoman written sources in the Trabzon land registry registers dated 1486. Güneysu was a sub-district center of Rize central district and became a district in 1987. The old name of Güneysu District and the name commonly used among the public is Potomya. It got this name because it is located between Salarha Stream and Potomya Stream, which are two important branches of Taşlıdere Basin, which are among the many short-distance, heavy-flowing streams that originate from the north of the mountains in the Black Sea Region. In other words, it was called Potamia because it was located in the middle of two rivers, and over time it turned into Potamia in popular language. Potamia (Ποτομία) means "river" in ancient Greek.
