İlkadım is the central district of Samsun province on the Black Sea coast, with an altitude of 5 meters above sea level and a surface area of 152.28 km². It is also the most populous district of the Black Sea Region, with a total population of 336,501 people. There is Canik district in the east of the district, Black Sea district in the north, Atakum district in the west, and Kavak district in the south. There are 61 neighborhoods in total in the district. The five largest neighborhoods in the district are; These neighborhoods are Fevzi Çakmak, Kazım Karabekir, Adalet, Bahçelievler and Kadıköy, and these neighborhoods constitute approximately one quarter of the district's population with a total population of 79,936 people. The prevailing winds in the district generally vary depending on the seasons. In summer, a local high pressure center occurs in the Black Sea Region and a local low pressure center occurs in Anatolia. Therefore, winds flowing from the Black Sea towards the anticyclone center are formed and these are north-east and north-west winds. In winter, it is under the influence of temporary low pressure centers. Dry and hot winds blowing from the southwest and south in the district reduce the humidity in the district. The district's average relative humidity is 73%. Especially in April and May, this figure reaches an average of 77-79%. In December, it drops to 70%. The absolute humidity of the district is on average 5.0 grams per year. Since absolute humidity is directly proportional to temperature, it reaches its highest value in the summer months. The most rainfall in the district falls in November and the least in May. The average annual rainfall is around 700 mm. The average number of rain days is 100 days per year. The historical Samsun Municipality building located in the district (May 2021) İlkadım Municipality was established in 1994, when Samsun Metropolitan Municipality was established, as a lower level municipality. However, with a law in 2008, it became one of the 4 central districts of Samsun, including Gazi and Yeşilkent lower level municipalities. It is currently the largest and most developed district of Samsun and the Black Sea Region in terms of population. The district was named İlkadım because Atatürk came to Samsun on May 19, 1919 and took the first step towards independence here.
