Kalecik

Kalecik is a district of Ankara in the Central Anatolia Region. Kalecik and its surroundings are a very old settlement, dating back to 4000 BC. Some remains have been found indicating that the Hittites lived in this region around 4000 BC. Later, the region came under the rule of Alexander the Great and then the Eastern Roman Empire. After the Turks came to Anatolia with the Battle of Manzikert in 1071, Kalecik Castle was captured by the Seljuk Turks in 1075 and came under their rule. It is understood that Candaroğulları ruled in the region during the period of principalities after the collapse of the Seljuk State. During the reign of Yıldırım Bayezid, Kalecik Castle, along with Ankara, was captured by the Ottomans. After Timur's withdrawal, the Candaroğulları regained control in the region for a short time, and then it came under the rule of the Ottomans again. Kalecik was a district of the Çankırı sanjak for many years during the Ottoman period. W.Ramsay, who has researched on Anatolian Historical Geography, mentioned a city named Acıtorızıacum around Kalecik. Additionally, in his research, W.Ramsay defined Kalecik as Eçelriga. In addition, in our recent history, it served as a point service in the Turkish War of Independence and to provide logistical support to the Kuva-yi Milliye forces. In 1925, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk visited the region during his journey to Kastamonu.
