Karesi

Karesi is a district of Balıkesir province of Turkey. On November 12, 2012, it became a district as a result of the division of the central district of Balıkesir into two with the Law No. 6360 adopted by the Turkish Grand National Assembly. Karesi is an agricultural economy center and a transportation center located at the crossroads of very busy roads.

The district is bordered by Manyas district in the north, Susurluk and Kepsut districts in the east, İvrindi and Balya districts in the west, and Altıeylül district in the south. As of 2020, 184,197 people live in the district.

The district, generally known as Misya in history, was established in the 13th century during the Karesi Principality. Its main source of livelihood is trade, industry, agriculture and animal husbandry, and it is known for its agricultural products such as okra, cowpea, melon, kelle cheese. Yağcıbedir carpet, cologne, clotted cream and höşmerimi are other well-known local products.
