Kargı

Kargı is a district of Çorum province. It is stated that the name of Kargı before the settlement of the Turks was Blaene. This name Blaene (Belen) is still used by the local people for the location near the village of Günyazı. According to rumors, the district took the name Kargı in the first quarter of the 16th century. Towards the end of the 11th century, the region including Kargı came under Turkish rule, but Kargı did not reach an important position for many years. In the 1521 census, the settlement, which was entirely composed of Muslims in the Çankırı sanjak, was seen as a small district with 44 villages. The population of the settlement increased significantly in the 1579 census, and the district center, with 177 households, consists of Hacı İlyas, Nefs-i Kargı, Câmi-i Kebîr and İmam Beğ neighborhoods. The settlement, which was seen as a township of the Tosya district at the end of the 19th century, was connected to the Osmancık district of the Çorum sanjak in 1914, and in the records of 1927, it is seen that it was connected to the Tosya district again. It was made a district in 1936 and connected to Kastamonu province, and in 1956 it was connected to Çorum province.
