Kavak

Kavak is a district of Samsun province. During the research conducted in 1942 in the Kale Doruğu Mound, located north of the district center, artifacts dating back to 3500-2000 BC were found. According to these data, Kavak has been a settlement since the Early Bronze Age. Finding artifacts from the Early Hellenistic Period, Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk and Ottoman periods in the Kale Doruk Mound shows both the settlement characteristics of this place and the continuity of settlement here. It was understood that the most important settlement at Kale Peak was in the Copper Age. The first tribe whose existence is proven in the region is the Kashkas. Kashkas are a semi-nomadic and aggressive community that adopted the sovereignty of the Hittites. The Hittites did not settle on a large scale in Kale Doruk; However, since the region was at a strategic point, they established a kind of garrison here, which coincided with their period of expansion and expansion. After the rule of the Hittites, Kavak came under the rule of the Phrygians in the 1200s BC and the Miletians in the 7th century BC. Kavak, which was annexed by the Pontus Kingdom in the 3rd century BC, was later dominated by the Romans. The people, who had previously known Judaism, became acquainted with Christianity when Saints Andre and Pier, one of Jesus' apostles, came to the region in the 1st century. During the Abbasid period (750-1528), Muslims reached the Black Sea coast via Malatya - Tokat and introduced the religion of Islam to these places. After the Battle of Manzikert in 1071, during the Seljuk period, when Rükneddin Süleyman was the ruler of Tokat, the region fell into the hands of the Seljuks. Chepni, one of the Turkmen tribes that came to Anatolia, started from Trabzon, Ünye and Kavak and became an important factor in the Turkification of the Black Sea. During the Ottoman period, Yıldırım Beyazıt Khan took the region from İsfendiyaroğulları to ensure unity in Anatolia. During the reign of Çelebi Mehmet in 1418, the district was completely taken over by the Ottomans. The subsequent history of Kavak continued its development within the Ottoman History. In an Ottoman land register dated 1518, it was seen that Kavak was a village (village) affiliated with the Canik Sanjak. In 1839, it became a sub-district of the central district. In 1934, the subdistrict organization was turned into a district organization.
