Mecitözü

Mecitözü is a district of Çorum province of Turkey. It has maintained its district status since the establishment of the Republic. Until the 11th century, the main settlement center in the Mecitözü region was located in the area called Eukhatia, Theodoropolis, Avkat throughout history, which is today in Beyözü village. Here, especially during the Roman and Byzantine periods, there was a town that attracted visitors with its annual fair. In the second half of the 11th century, the settlement center shifted to the point where Mecitözü is located today, and the location where Beyözü village is located today lost its importance. During this period, Turkmen settlement took place in the region. The current name of Mecitözü comes from Abdülmecîd el-Herevi, who was the judge of the region during the Danishmend period and had a mansion in the town. It has been mentioned in sources as "Mecid-özü" since the 12th century. A clock tower was built in Mecitözü in 1899, but this tower was demolished on a date not specified in the sources. In 2018, a new clock tower was built in the town by the municipality. The old Provincial Special Administration building, located at the intersection of Merzifon Street and Eski Amasya Street in the center, is a historical wooden building that has been registered under protection since 1983. This building was restored in the 2010s and opened as a course and exhibition center.
