Meriç

Meriç is a town and district center of Edirne province in the Thracian part of the Marmara Region. Meriç district is surrounded by the districts of Uzunköprü in the east and southeast, Ipsala in the south, and Greece with a 56 km border in the west and north. The district is named after the Meriç River and consists of 2 towns and 21 villages. Today's district lands were captured by the Ottomans in 1361. Until the Balkan Wars (1912-1913), a part of the territory of today's district was connected to Sofulu (Greek; Souflion) and another part to Uzunköprü. After the loss of Sofulu, the region was made a district in 1913 under the name of Kavaklı, and in 1919 it was connected to Uzunköprü accident. Until November 25, 1935, the settlement was known as Kavaklı and was renamed Meriç on this date,[5] and remained under Greek occupation from 1920 to 1922. In 1936, Büyük Doğanca village became the district center. Meriç Municipality was established in 1930.
