Midyat is a district of Mardin province. Midyat is a meeting point of religions and languages. It is described as Matiate in 9th century BC Assyrian tablets. "Matiate" is an Aramaic/Syriac name meaning "my neighborhood", "my homeland". After the Assyrian king Nasserpal Tur Abidin II of Assyria plundered the Arameans, the history of this battle was written on tablets. The first Assyrian Christians in Midyat also lived in caves. Midyat has been besieged and plundered many times throughout history. Finally, in the dark days of World War I, in the year of the "Edict", two-thirds of the town's inhabitants lost their lives. But after 1930 the town was revitalized: Churches, houses and some places were restored. After that, the settlement pattern gradually settled down. Some movies and TV series were shot in Midyat.
