Murgul

Before 1955, Murgul was just the name of a river, valley and township. The town named Murgul was founded by merging the Aduça (Adaklı) neighborhoods of Damar village and the Lower Küre neighborhoods of Küre village. Aduça was one of the settlements in the Murgul Valley. Georgian historian Zakaria Chichinadze, who visited the Murgul valley in the early 1890s, also mentioned this village as Aducha in his Georgian book. Chichinadze listed this village as one of the 28 Georgian villages in the Murgul valley.[9] As a matter of fact, in the population determination made in Artvin liva in 1922, the population of the villages of Murgul township was recorded as "Islamic-Georgian". However, in his book published five years later, Muvahhid Zeki wrote that the people of Murgul township, whom he defined as Muslims, hated Georgians and Georgianism. The population of Aduça village, one of the settlements that make up the town of Murgul, in 1922 consisted of 6 people living in 2 households. In 1925, Aduça's name was changed to Adaklı. At that time, 266 people were living in 52 households in the village. In the 1935 general census, there were only 6 villages in the Murgul sub-district: Başköy, Damar, Erenköy, Kura, Özmal and Petek. Damar village was the center of the township. Aduça / Adaklı was transformed into a neighborhood of Damar village before the 1935 general census. Küre village, formerly known as Kura, was historically two separate settlements as Yukarı Küre and Aşağı Küre. When it was transformed into a single village called Küre, Lower Küre became a neighborhood of Küre village. Aduça (Adaklı) neighborhood and Aşağı Küre neighborhood were merged on May 17, 1955, and Murgul village was established.[8] The establishment of the village took place just before the 1955 general census. According to the general population census held on October 23, 1955, 2,573 people lived in Murgul village, which is also the center of Murgul township. At this date, the Murgul township included the villages of Başköy, Bucur, Damar, Erenköy, Küre, Özmal and Petek, apart from the village of Murgul. The total population of the township consisted of 7,790 people.
