Reyhanlı

Reyhanlı is a district of Hatay province in Turkey.

Reyhanlı also means Irtah Resting place in earlier history. It was a small town called Irtah, generally known as the place where several Arab tribes lived. From the 16th century onwards, Turks (Turkmen tribes), mostly nomads from the Rey region, settled in this town. In 1855, Caucasian and Cypriot immigrants were brought from Rumelia and settled in the town. The town, which was later named Reyhanlı, was captured by the French in 1918 and was administered with the status of a parish. On July 8, 1938, it was liberated from French occupation and became a district in 1939, the year it joined the territory of the Republic of Turkey. Cemil Meriç, one of the leading names of Turkish Literature, whose family is a Dimetoka immigrant, spent his childhood in Reyhanlı.
