There are various rumors about where the name Sarıkamış comes from. Three of the most common of these are: The name of the region was given as Sarıkamış because one of the Turkish Beys bought these lands in exchange for a turban and some food. According to the second rumor, it comes from the yellow reeds growing in Bebek Lake (a dried lake) in the region. According to the third rumor, it comes from the settlement of a Turkish tribe in the Sarıkamış trench region between the Caspian Sea and the Aral Lake. There are many historical artifacts from the Russian domination period in the district. The most notable of these is the Tsar Nicholas Mansion in Upper Sarıkamış. The history of the district goes back to the Byzantine period. The region's entry into the domination of Muslim rulers begins with the Seljuk period. Seljuk commander Alparslan captured this region in his war with the Byzantine king on 16 August 1064. 90,000 Ottoman soldiers lost their lives as a result of the Sarıkamış Operation during the war between the Ottoman Empire and the Russian Empire. The 9th P. Division was abolished in 2005 and the 9th Mot. P. Brig. was established in its place. Kızılçubuk village of the district was evacuated due to terrorist incidents in the 1990s.
