Söğüt

Söğüt is a district of Bilecik province. It is known as the first capital of the Ottoman Principality. In 1231, while it was called Thebasion, it was taken from the Empire of Iznik by the Anatolian Seljuk commander Ertuğrul Gazi and given to him along with Domaniç by the Anatolian Seljuk ruler Alaeddin Keykubad III.[citation needed] During the Ottoman period, it was first the center of Sultanönü sanjak, and then it became a district under this sanjak when the center was moved to Eskişehir. In 1648, it was a sub-district of Lefke (today Osmaneli) accident of Bursa sanjak of Anatolian province. Later, it joined the borders of the Ertuğrul sanjak of the Anatolian province, centered in Bilecik. Finally, it was an accident under the Ertuğrul sanjak of the Hüdavendigâr province. It was occupied by the Greeks three times during the War of Independence and was liberated from occupation on September 6, 1922. At the entrance of the Kızılsaray village of the district, there is a Greek outpost bearing both Ottoman and Greek inscriptions and this outpost is in ruins.
