Sungurlu

Sungurlu is a district located within the administrative borders of Çorum province. The district center is developed because it is on the highway between the Black Sea and the capital, and it also has the highest central population among Çorum districts. It is rumored that Sungurlu took its name from Sunguroğlu Mehmet Bey. Sungurlu was affiliated with the province of Sivas during the Ottoman period. The Sungurlu region was ruled by the Assyrians, Hittites, Phrygians, Cimmerians, Mongols, Alexander and Galatians, and then was taken over by the Romans and then by the Byzantines. After the gates of Anatolia were opened to the Turks with the Battle of Manzikert in 1071, Sungurlu and its region were taken from the Byzantines by Danişment Ahmet Gazi and came under the administration and sovereignty of the Turks. Like many regions of Anatolia, this region bears the traces of various cultures and civilizations that have existed since ancient times. Although the first settlements in the region were in the Chalcolithic period (3000 BC), the development of civilization occurred in later years. Hattis, one of the indigenous tribes who lived in Anatolia between 1800 BC and 1200 BC, made this region an important settlement center. The Hittites, who later dominated the region, made Hattusa (Boğazköy) their capital.
