Ula

It became a district in 1954. Located in the south of Muğla, Ula has Köyceğiz in the east, Gökova Bay in the west, Muğla central district in the north, and Marmaris district in the south. Its surface area is 407 km². Ula center is 600 meters above sea level. The distance between Muğla and Ula is 15 kilometers. When you go via the Muğla - Marmaris highway, Ula is 3 km away from the main road. Ula district is the closest district to Muğla city centre. The district center is surrounded by mountains on all four sides. The land is rugged and 65% of it is covered with forests. In addition, Ula is the place with the most bicycles per capita in Turkey. It also finds its place in puzzles as the 3-letter district of Muğla. Bullfights and cycling tours are also organised. There are a health center, government office, military, 1 bank, 2 high schools, 1 marketplace, police station, primary and secondary school and nursery in the district. Although there is no exact information about when Ula was founded, it dates back to B.C. It is estimated that it was founded in the 6th century. The findings in the ancient city of Kyllandos, 3 km away from the town center, show this. Additionally, "Ola" is among the cities mentioned in the agreement made between the Ionians and Carians in 1440 BC. According to the works of Evliya Çelebi, after Ulama Bey, one of the Menteşe chiefs, conquered the region, its name was changed to Ula. Ula is one of the places that settled down early. Ula, which established its municipal organization in 1895, gained district status in 1954. In the history of Ula dating back to BC, there are ruins of 2 Ancient Settlements in the city center of Ula: 7 Delik and Kyllandos. 7 Holes are the remains of early period graves and there is a multi-storey structure containing 14 graves in the cave. It is at the foot of Alicin Mountain within the district. Kyllandos Ancient City is located in a place called Okkataş Mevkii, just 3 km southwest of Ula. This ancient city, which is one of the important settlements of the Carians, has magnificent Rock Tombs, Theater and Agora. The findings show that this was an important settlement.
