Ünye

Ünye is a district of Ordu province. It is the largest district of Ordu after Altınordu, the central district. Ünye is also known as the "City of Judges" because it was the birthplace of many judges during the Ottoman Period. The district has a typical Black Sea climate. Ünye is one of the rare settlements whose name has not been changed since its establishment. The name Ünye has various spellings in old sources, such as Oinoie, Onea and Unieh. These names, which remind us of Ünye as they are pronounced, are derived from the word "Oinos", which means "vineyard, grape, wine" in the Luwian language and means "Wine region, wine-rich region". The district's economy is basically based on agriculture. Indeed, hazelnut farming in particular constitutes the lifeblood of the district's economy. Families engaged in hazelnut farming, businesses engaged in hazelnut trade and hazelnut cracking facilities constitute the lifeblood of the economy. Hazelnut gardens cover most of the district campus. Products other than hazelnuts do not occupy a large place in economic life, and are generally grown by families for their own needs or sold by villagers in the market. Ünye date, corn and beet known as beet are also grown, and kiwi production has been increasing in recent years due to the favorable climate. Apart from agriculture, the largest industrial enterprise of the district is Ünye Cement Factory. Ünye port has never achieved the expected vitality. However, thanks to the Ünye Shipyard established within it, it took on a more active role with ship repair and construction works. Ünye flour factory ÜNSAN is a medium-sized flour factory. In recent years, there has been a revival in the number of textile workshops. Craftsman businesses are the most important source of income after agriculture. Indeed, it is observed that tradesmen also direct the political life of the city. Additionally, interest in Ünye magnetic sand has increased recently. Ünye-Ceyhan Pipeline is still active today. Hazelnuts, which are the lifeblood of the economy, also determine social life. It is observed that the district center is emptied and people go to the villages in the hazelnut harvest months, at the end of July and August. Before the harvest season, Ünye is experiencing its liveliest period. The dynamism of social life draws attention with the influence of Ünye Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences and Vocational School, which have been opened in recent years.
