Yakakent
Yakakent (formerly known as Gümenüz/Gümenos) is a district of Samsun province. Although fishing and tobacco are the main economic elements, thousands of tourists leave significant money to the district during the summer months. It is also the sister city of Kushimoto, a Japanese city. The foundation of Yakakent dates back to 200 BC. The name of this settlement founded by the Byzantines was 'kominos' at the time. Kominos means 'headless bishop' in Greek. Today's Yakakent was founded in 1800 by 3-4 families coming from Gerze. The Turks who settled here later changed its name to 'Gümenüz'. Yakakent grew with the people from the Eastern Black Sea region who escaped from the Russian occupation in 1893-95 and with the exchanges coming from Thessaloniki between 1923-1924. The Mukhtar's Office was established in 1896, and the Municipality organization was established on 1 March 1963. With the establishment of the municipal organization, the name Gümesüz was changed to 'Yakakent', meaning coastal city. It became a district on May 9, 1991.
